Since the lightning siege that started on Saturday, August 15, 2020, there have been nearly 14,000 lightning strikes. During this time-period, there have been more than 900 new wildfires, which have now burned over 1.5 million acres. There have 8 fatalities and nearly 3,300 structures destroyed.
This piece came about from sensing the changes to the environment of the wildfires. The normally clear Bay Area atmosphere is now hazy and thick with the scent of ashes. The sky a mottled gray with a layer of smoke obfuscating the otherwise golden sun, turning its golden rays into a perfect red silhouette, at once both beautiful and devastating.
